Be Inspired

The best time to start over is when you feel an overwhelming need for change. There is no single "right" moment. Waiting for external circumstances to change can be procrastination masking fear. The most effective time is the moment you decide to take action and make an intentional decision to change your life. Don’t make excuses, determine the steps needed and start your journey.

It’s never too late to be what you might have been. ~George Eliot

Signs It’s Time for a Fresh Start

  • You Feel Stuck or Unhappy: A persistent feeling of being in a rut, where life feels like a blur or permanently chaotic, is a strong sign that a change is needed.
  • Misalignment with Values: If your current situation, job, or relationships no longer align with who you want to be or your core values, it may be time to reassess your path.
  • Your Gut is Telling You: Listen to your intuition. If your body or mind is telling you something needs to change, don't wait for a drastic event or a "rock bottom" moment to occur.
  • Major Life Events: Significant life events naturally create a "fresh start effect," which can provide a psychological boost in motivation. The most popular date for a “fresh start” is January 1st.
    • The start of a a new season.
    • Your birthday
    • The first day of a new month or week (like a Monday)
    • Moving to a new home or city
    • Starting a new job or graduating
    • The end of a relationship or the death of a loved one, which can be a difficult but powerful catalyst for change

Get Started on Your Fresh Start

Reflect and set intentions

  • Look back: Reflect on past experiences, successes, and mistakes to understand what you want to change.
  • Examine values: What’s important to you to ensure your goals align with your current values.
  • Define goals: Set clear, meaningful goals for what you want to achieve. Be specific about what a successful fresh start looks like for you.

Create a plan and take action

  • Break it down: Divide large goals into smaller, actionable steps to make them less overwhelming.
  • Schedule: Schedule your steps into a calendar to ensure you dedicate time to them. Also include self-care and rest.
  • Change one thing at a time: Avoid making too many drastic changes at once to prevent feeling overwhelmed. The process should be more sustainable if you’re really ready to live your new life.
  • Be open to try new things: Introduce new routines, hobbies, or skills to help build momentum and replace old habits.

Declutter and organize

  • Physical space: Clear out clutter in your home and workspace. This can be as simple as cleaning out a closet or a specific area.
  • Digital space: Tidy up your digital life by organizing files, managing social media, and setting digital boundaries, such as work-life separation.
  • Mental space: Use techniques like journaling or mindfulness to process past regrets and clear your mind.

Build a supportive environment

  • Positive mindset: Cultivate a positive attitude and be realistic about your expectations.
  • Lean on others: Seek out a support group or lean on your inner circle when you feel discouraged.
  • Forgive yourself: Acknowledge you’ll make mistakes. Be patient with yourself, and celebrate your progress, no matter how small.

Questions to ask yourself

  1. When I was younger, where did I see myself at this point in my life? Is that something I still desire?
  2. Visualize your life as if time and money weren’t a consideration. What does it look like?
  3. What are your top five priorities?
  4. What are your top five values?
  5. Is what I’m doing now giving me the life I want?
  6. What am I willing to let go of to live the life of my dreams?
  7. How hard am I willing to work to make my dream life a reality?

Next steps

  1. Write or draw what your fresh start looks like.
  2. Be specific.
  3. Where will you live, who will be in your life, what are you doing for work/pleasure.
  4. Determine a step by step and an estimated timeline.
  5. Break each step into small manageable tasks.
  6. Execute your plan and each step.
  7. Live your dream

Once you know what you’re willing to sacrifice, you can begin planning your new life. Oftentimes life gets in the way of what we think we want. Remember, it’s never too late to be who you might have been.

At the end of the day, only you know when it’s time to for a change and what you're willing to do to implement that change.
